ECU unlock questions

Does my vehicle need an ECU unlock?

It depends on the controller, its software and the tuning platform you plan to use. The vehicle listing narrows the options; Cedar confirms the appropriate service from your controller details.

What’s the difference between an ECU, DME and TCU?

In this directory, ECU refers to the engine computer. BMW calls its gasoline engine computer a DME and its diesel engine computer a DDE. A TCU controls the transmission. Check whether your listing covers the engine or transmission controller.

Can I mail my ECU to Cedar from another state?

Yes, for supported ECUs, including applications such as a Volkswagen Jetta. Contact us first to confirm compatibility and removal and shipping arrangements. TCUs can be housed inside the transmission, so mailing one may not be practical. Ask us about the service before arranging removal.

AutoTuner’s “Mail-In Unlock” label names a specific processing method. It does not limit which supported controllers customers can send to Cedar.

Does an unlock include a tune?

An unlock provides supported programming access. The calibration is a separate service unless the listing explicitly includes it. Tell us if you need both so we can review the complete job.

How much does an ECU unlock cost?

Standalone ECU, DME and TCU unlocks are $200. Tuning and license bundles are separate.
